TRANSFORMING THE EFFIJI
EXPERIENCE FOR A BETTER LIFE

Best Practices for Healthy Integration

Be patient. The process of the breath will continue over subsequent days.

Congratulations, you just consciously hyperventilated for an hour!

I’m sure there’s a lot going on in your brain and body right now. There’s time to sort all this out and make sense of this experience, but first, just allow the process to finish. This will involve a lot of small and large changes over the coming days.

Sometimes these changes may not seem to be connected to your Effiji Breath session; like the way someone is behaving or having random things happen which seem to be re-directing you. Allow it all because it’s helping you get more on your right path.

It’s ok to feel magical, powerful, and energized and also feel exhausted, emotional, and confused. Or both! Understand this is a powerful process that has stirred up hidden unconscious material. You can easily feel overly sensitive and moody. It’s normal. Try to rest and most of all be kind to yourself, you’re probably going to be inelegant, unskillful, confused, and imperfect. Let the energy finish its transformation. It usually takes 3 days.

People ask us all the time if they can do it on their own and when is the right time to do it again. First, we recommend reading Chapter 5 of A Liberated Life where Elijah discusses this extensively, but here are two short answers. Please don’t do this on your own. It may not be safe. And Second, you can do as much as you want. You can do it tomorrow. The question is how much change is your life ready to handle? If you’re not sure and want some advice, email us.

Love,
Elijah and Sarah

FAQ

Is it normal for my hands to tighten and cramp?

Yes, it’s normal. All the stored memory from unprocessed experiences begins to be released when you are breathing. It moves out from the heart center particularly to the hands (although it can be the feet and mouth, as well). These are the main meridian outlets you find in TCM philosphy.

As the breathing starts to move the blocked energy out, it travels toward your extremities. If it cannot be released fast enough, it will dam up at the end of the hands.

Think of it as positive because you are doing a lot of clearing.

After several session, after you become more clear you will not get it anymore.

I am concerned about my safety. The physical reaction of this exercise is very strong, my body couldn’t move and my whole body became numb. I became afraid whether it could cause some sort of physical issue like a seizure.

Can you please explain the theory behind those symptoms and why it is safe to do this practice?

Ultimately you must decide whether you want to do this practice because indeed the experiences, mostly at the beginning, are very strong physically. We have shared this practice over 30 years with tens of thousands of people without seeing any side effects. Some cramping and soreness for a few days is possible but no long term negative physical effect.

The strong physical sensations are a result of blocked energy being released from the unconscious. Understand that the breathwork isn’t doing something to you or creating something new. It is merely showing you what is already there by bringing it from the unconscious into your awareness.

The fear that is arising is old memory that accompanies all of these physical sensations. The sensations are memory. It is old stuck and stagnate due to trauma and conditioning.

I was always told that hyperventilation was bad and that if someone hyperventilates you should stop them. Can you please explain why this is not a dangerous thing to do?

Hyperventilation as a phrase definitely has a negative connotation. First lets break down the word. Hyper meaning more than enough and ventilation which is breathing. So all it means is breathing more than enough. It is fairly vague and innocuous as a word. The fact that it is given a medical certification implies something more.

Hyperventilation as you describe is an involuntary reaction to a perceived threat. It is what the body automatically does when a trauma is being triggered. Effiji Breathwork is conscious hyperventilation. This is much different because you are choosing to do it. You are choosing to change your state. You can stop at any moment if you wanted to.

Hyperventilating as an involuntary act means it is controlling you.

When someone is doing it unconsciously it is because the body is trying to release a past trauma. If you kept going the person would feel better.

What arises from doing the practice intentionally is the same energy except you accept it and keep going to fully release the trauma and never suffer from it again.

After talking with my friends after the Effiji Breathwork I discovered that each of us have had completely different experiences. I felt numb and stiff most of the time, while some of my friends were hyper and were moving around the whole time. Some of us were restless and others kept falling asleep. Why are there so many differences?

There is a reason for every single experience that is unique to each person. The details depends on the person and it is what the benefit of having a processing session with a faciltator is for.

Ultimately you can say that everything impulse and experience that comes up is buried energy or memory from the past that is being released and it causes different reactions in the mind of the breath. Not just the mental mind but the body-mind.

The experiences themselves are as important as the attitude you take toward. Sometimes it is valuable to understand why you sleep during the breath and other times it is best to simply try to watch the whole thing without getting attached to what you see.

If you can allow all of these experience without resistance then they will release and re-pattern in your body and mind in a different way and you will feel clearer and more free later.

What is the ultimate goal of this work?

You have to decide if you think the practice will benefit you. We know it will but that isn’t helpful if you don’t agree. If you feel a little better, clearer or intuitively think it can help you then we suggest you continue. The process will change lot especially at the beginning. You will gain a lot of wisdom about yourself the more you do Effiji because you will start to see reoccurring patterns and changes that will tell you a lot about how you operate in life and how you should best operate.

The ultimate goal is to have a better life by being free trauma, conditioning and suffering. Effiji Breathwork is used to feel better in your life. Effiji takes you directly to the place where trauma is stored. By accessing your unconscious you accelerate your growth and healing.

Can I do some yoga after the Effiji session? I am wondering what are your top tips for self care post breath…

You should definitely take on movement practices after Effiji. It will help keep the energy moving and re-patterning in the correct way.  Please see our integration page where there are lots of tips.

I would start by trying in advance not to book anything too mental or rigorous for after the breath like going to work, parties, doing your taxes, or getting into heavy traffic. Having said that, you adjust according to how much control you can have afterward.

Having some quiet time to yourself where you can rest, eat healthy food, be in nature, take a bath… are helpful. We strongly suggest against big gatherings because you may be overwhelmed because of how open you are. We would also strongly suggest avoiding alcohol and weed in particular, as they counter the effects of the breath. We suggest staying away from them for at least 3 days.

I slept well the first night and I normally get up twice and have sleep issues but I felt very sleepy and i have to work overtime today and my brain feels mushy. Any suggestions?

When you first do the practice there can be a lot of disruption to your normal state for about 3 days. It is very common.

Because we tend to be blocked up the freeing of our energy from Effiji will continue long after the session is over. Even though that’s a good thing it has to go through your system to change, repattern and regulate all your body functions.

In Asian countries the electric outlet runs at a higher amperage than in North America. Imagine plugging an american made device into a Chinese wall socket. It would blow up the device. You are re-wiring yourself to accommodate more energy. This can be tiring.

If the purpose of this is to help you to be more calm, peaceful and clear, a process needs to take place to clear out all the impurities and toxins. It continues to move the energy long after the breathwork is finished.

If you can allow it the first few times you do Effiji eventually you will have no after effects and you feel fantastic after everytime you do it without the fatigue.

How do you suggest you work with yourself when there is much reaction inside after the session is over?

The most important to ask is “how to be difficult experiences” because this is not only for Effiji Breathwork, it is for every part of our life.

What arises from the work you did is old memory from unresolved experiences of the past that was trapped and stored in your body/mind.

By breathing in this way, you are accessing a lot of hidden material that is controlling your mind and body. The breathwork isn’t causing what is happening, it is releasing that memory.

There is no simple answer for how to be with it.

There are two types of suffering. One is natural like when a loved one passes away and you will suffer the loss. There is another kind of suffering where we are unwilling to be with our experiences and we try to control our life through the choices we make. These choices come from the mind that is living in fear of change. This tension causes us tremendous problems because we cannot grow and fulfill our purpose when we live in resistance to our experiences.

The first suffering is necessary. The experiences that arises from Effiji are like this. If you can allow, tolerate and accept what arose during and after the Effiji session, it will make you stronger and you will feel happier and more free.

There is suffering we must learn how to live with and accept. We allow for this suffering because we know we will be better later, so it is worth it.

The second suffering is what most people do. They just fight against and avoid anything that will cause them discomfort.

We don’t advocate simply being uncomfortable. We are saying there is a purpose. The purpose is by allowing your discomfort and tolerating what arises for you from the Effiji breathwork you are clearing out old trauma and patterns that are preventing from being happy and free. Allow it and you will grow and be more of who you really are in your life.
